Planning a cold-weather trip and wondering if your heated vest can come along? Good news: heated apparel is generally allowed on flights. But because these garments are powered by rechargeable batteries, there are some air travel rules you’ll want to follow to ensure smooth, safe boarding.
Are heated vests Allowed on Flights?
Yes, heated vests are typically permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage. The key detail lies in the battery that powers them. Most heated vests use lithium-ion batteries—commonly allowed, but regulated.
The general rule across most airlines is simple: keep batteries in your carry-on luggage, and ensure they meet standard capacity limits.
General Airline Rules for Heated Vests
- Battery capacity limit: Batteries must be under 100Wh to be carried without airline approval. Most heated vest batteries fall well within this range (e.g., 5,000–10,000mAh).
- Carry-on only: Batteries should always be placed in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
- Remove the battery before boarding: Always disconnect the battery from the vest before passing through security and boarding the plane.
- Protect battery terminals: Store batteries in a case or pouch to prevent accidental contact with metal objects.
How to Pack Your Heated Vest for Travel
- Place the battery in a separate compartment of your carry-on.
- Bring a printed or digital copy of your battery’s capacity specs in case staff ask for verification.
- Use a zippered pouch or mesh bag to store your battery and cable safely.
What Not to Do
- ❌ Don’t wear the vest with the battery plugged in during check-in or security screening.
- ❌ Don’t store the battery in your checked luggage.
- ❌ Don’t bring large-capacity batteries without confirming with the airline in advance.
